Packaging is ubiquitous in our world. It displays, transports and preserves goods, thereby reducing their environmental footprint. On the other hand, the production and use of packaging itself leads to consumption of resources and immissions into the environment. Therefore, society and governments worldwide have set themselves the task of decoupling economic growth from resource consumption. For packaging, this means minimising material consumption, reducing immissions and promoting a circular economy.
This event highlights regulatory developments and requirements for packaging. Material-specific advantages and disadvantages will be presented. It is followed by an excursion to the world of industry associations and standardisation bodies. The event concludes with a brief outlook on challenges waiting to be tackled for example by educational and research institutions.

Fight Greenwashing: How EU Law Regulates Marketing for Sustainable Consumption.

This online seminar provides a practical look at how EU consumer law tackles misleading environmental claims and unfair practices: from greenwashing to premature obsolescence. We will explore key directives like the Empowering Consumers Directive and the Right to Repair, and see how national authorities coordinate to enforce these rules against multinational companies. Using real case studies from the European Commission's enforcement actions, the session bridges law and practice. No legal background is required.
